We'd been wanting to get a new pet for awhile, since our beloved Bobby McGee past away almost 3 years ago. But the time never seemed right. There is something about the age 2 though that gets me thinking that maybe it's time for another child (Calla was conceived 3 weeks after Addie's 2nd birthday). Since another human child was not an option, or even a desire, we decided that this would be the perfect time (coincidently, 3 weeks after Calla's 2nd birthday) to add to our family with a feline.
We adopted Penelope from the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk. We came very close to adopting a totally different kitten named "Honda", but as we were filling out the forms we learned that we wouldn't be able to take her home that night because she hadn't been spayed yet. Addie was SO ready to bring home a cat that day that we decided to pick out a different kitten. We decided on another kitty named "Penelope" and all thoughts of changing the name to some mutually agreed upon new name went out the window...as the name "Penelope" suits her so perfectly and is a pretty great name.
She is a super sweetheart. So friendly and loving. She has slept in bed with me and Mike both nights since we adopted her. This is very sweet, but also has severely hindered the amount of sleep we've gotten. Apparently she sleeps on Mike's chest and smells his breath. She cuddles up right next to me and purrs like a lawnmower. We would sleep better if we shut our door, but I would feel so badly shutting her out...so yes, we are co-sleeping (something we never wanted to do with our first two children...guess the 3rd one always gets away with everything ;) )
She is only 4 months old, but she is a medium haired cat so she looks much bigger than most 4 month old kittens I've seen. Her hair is so fluffy and she has a tail like a raccoon. I'm always surprised when I pick her up, how light she is.
Penelope is fascinated with the toilets, so much so that I'm considering adding an extra "e" to the end of her name.
